Use Your Time Wisely

‘Making the most of your time...’Ephesians 5:16 NAS

If you’re wise you’ll spend time to stop and think about how you’re spending your time. Have heard about ‘to-do’ lists? Do you know the story of where the idea came from? In 1918 Charles M. Schwab was president of Bethlehem Steel—the largest shipbuilder and second-largest steel producer in USA. He invited Ivy Lee, a consultant, to help him: ‘Show me a way to get more things done with my time.’ Lee replied, ‘Give me 15 minutes with each of your executives.’ They agreed on the price for the consultancy. ‘Nothing, unless it works. After three months send a cheque for what you think it is worth.’ Lee’s plan for increasing productivity was simple. ‘Write down the six most important tasks you have to do tomorrow. Number them in order of importance. When you arrive in the morning, begin work at once on number one and stay on it until it is completed. Recheck your priorities, then begin with number two, then number three. Make this a habit every working day. Anything not done at the end of the day can become part of the list of six things for the next day.’ How much did Schwab pay his consultant? $25,000 [the equivalent of about US$500,000 today!] Are you struggling with getting things done? Are you too busy for the things of God? Why not try this simple idea for yourself! Paul taught: ‘Therefore, my dear brothers and sisters, stand firm. Let nothing move you. Always give yourselves fully to the work of the Lord, because you know that your labour in the Lord is not in vain.’ (1 Corinthians 15:58 NIV)
